The series of exercises “Motion Sickness Exercise” (2022) takes the shortcoming of virtual reality technology (VR) as an occasion to negotiate physical states: sickness—wellness—madness. By means of various exercises, knowledge expansion through the body is tested innovatively. A problem that arises in VR in connection with motion is a form of vertigo caused by the discrepancy between the body’s own movement and the visualized environment. Virtual reality is used in this artist-led research to take the human body beyond the boundaries of normative ways of thinking. The installation and the video are part of a series of exercises by the artist Angela Stiegler. The potential of feelings of vertigo and motion sickness is examined in collaboration with scientists Shila Rastizadeh, Prof. Dr. Timo Götzelmann, and Pascal Karg; physician Prof. Dr. Med Sandra Becker-Bense; artist Prof. Susanne Kühn; and Director of Photography Julia Swoboda.
