More about the artwork

In his studio in Gaeta, Italy, Twombly left behind a series of eight pictures that he had painted in February 2011, just before his death: swirls of red, yellow, and orange extend across a light-green background, forming radiant color chords. One can virtually see how Twombly applied the brush, freshly dipped in paint, how the paint ran thickly down the canvas, and how the gesture lost strength as it progressed. Twombly used a broad brush, which he tied to a long stick so that the lines could no longer be controlled in detail. The individual loops, each composed of several brushstrokes, seem truncated — indeed, short of breath, as if Twombly was expressing the physical exertions of aging in his final paintings.
