More about the artwork

For an exhibition in her birthplace and hometown of New Orleans, Jacqueline Humphries painted some protest signs in 2008. Only there is nothing written on them—instead of demands, accusations, or mockery, they contain abstract compositions. At first glance, there could hardly be a greater contrast between everyday political demands and the poetry of gestural markings. Yet Humphries’s signs recall the tradition of inner turmoil that has inspired and accompanied expressive painting since the beginning of the last century.
