More about the artwork

Pope.L once described himself as “a fisherman of social absurdity.” In his works, the artist often employs every day and ordinary objects and formats to playfully confront us with our discomfort with American society and its conditions and discrepancies. In the installation “Party Room” (2001), 112 brim-filled bottles of the alcohol brand Wild Irish Rose are neatly lined up on shelves against the wall. Stuffed toys in all kinds of bright colors, shapes and sizes are attached to the neck of each bottle. But the cuddly bears, ducks, lions, frogs and many other animals have their heads stuck down the bottlenecks, revealing their rear ends to the viewers. Together, the sweet alcohol and cheap toys paint an ambivalent mood of childhood, despair, partying, and alcohol abuse.
