More about the artwork

The women featured in this photograph are no strangers. Four of them are artists—Charline von Heyl, Michaela Eichwald, Jutta Koether, and Cosima von Bonin—while the art critic Isabelle Graw is seated on the far right. Hans-Jörg Mayer’s picture is modeled on a photograph of female Colombian guerrilla fighters. His protagonists, too, are equipped with real weapons. But was this really a call to arms? And if so, who was the enemy and what had to be defended? Looking back, it becomes clear that these women had no easy job in the mainly male-dominated painting scene at that time. In the years that followed, however, they waged challenging and strategic battles and finally took their rightful place in the history of painting.
